Why 'Squid Game 2' Faces Plagiarism Allegations Ahead of Release

The second season of the South Korean dystopian survival thriller television series Squid Game, developed for television by Korean writer and television producer Hwang Dong-hyuk, is set to "Squid Game release" on December 26, 2024. The season is produced by Netflix.

Squid Game 2 Plagiarism Controversy Claims Indian Director's Lawsuit 

Netflix's popular show Squid Game is facing accusations of plagiarism. Indian film director Soham Shah has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, claiming that Squid Game copied his 2009 film Luck. Shah says that both works have similar plots, characters, tone, and sequence of events. He is seeking damages and an injunction against copyright infringement.

1. Indian film "Luck" And "Squid Game 2" Netflix Controversy 

I watched the movie when I was pretty young and the found the film very entertaining as it was quite different from the usual Bollywood rom-coms. Rewatched it later when I became an adult and realised that it was a pretty mediocre and average movie. 

Since I have seen Squid Game as well, take my word on the fact that there is very little similarity between the two content. The movie "Luck" is similar to the extent that people are playing deadly game testing their luck which is being live streamed to the outside world who are betting on the contestants, thats it. Squid Game is more nuanced and overall more statisfying and entertaining IMAO.

2. Inspiration From Other Sources

As director of Squid Game himself has said that he was inspired from Japanese survival horror game content and since I have also consumed similar content like the Japanese manga Kaiji, Tomodachi game, Liar game, "Alice in Borderland K-Drama" etc. people are absolutely right in commenting that Squid Game seems like a ripoff of above mentioned content and I can't deny that fact. 

However, thats the case with most popular content. Survival horror game genre is a very niche genre having limited audience, 

What Squid Game Director Did 2 Things Right With The Drama :-

• 1) Injected Korean culture and context into the games and contestants

• 2) Making the game simpler and the entire content palatable to general masses leading to the global success across all countries, languages and age groups.

3. No One Has A Copyright Over Survival Horror Game Genre

Japan as in most domains, is far more superior in inventing novel products and services than its Asian counterparts which are then consumed by Otakus like me. But this should not prevent countries to make similar content to Japan as starting point and then later they can pivot to things which is very indigenous to their own country's culture and history. 

I would love Japanese content to have more soul and humane connection and Korean content to have more intelligent and logical characters. Instead of fighting and commenting among ourselves, we should focus more on suggesting similar stuff from each other countries and memory so that we all can have access to the colorful world of cinema.

Squid Game 2 Controversy Netflix's Response

Netflix has denied these claims, calling them baseless. They say that Squid Game is an original work by director Hwang Dong-hyuk and that they will defend against the lawsuit.

Squid Game Global Success

Squid Game has become a huge hit, with over 1.65 billion views in just four weeks after its release in 2021. The highly anticipated sequel, Squid Game season 2, is set to be released on December 26.
